bitter

‘With "bitter" I'm marking my place in the world in the song; it's my way of letting people know that my viewpoint matters as much as anyone else's. With this, I feel like "bitter" can relate to many of us - the many of us wishing their suffering would be given space to simply exist.’ - Ruby

Ruby pours themes of life, nature and human connection into her introspective acoustic ballads. Pulling from the quiet looming of Thom Yorke, Joni Mitchell's beautifully original lyrical metaphors, and the emotionally intense songs of Damien Rice. Ruby pairs her biting poetry with instrumentations that swell from gentle acoustics to souring crescendos.

Ruby is a singer and songwriter from Margate, who wrote her first original song, ‘Pour’, last summer at AEE’s SoundEscapes programme. Since then she has been writing and recording her first cut of tracks at the Tonetic Studio, exploring how lyrical themes of the natural world around us, different song structures and the components of her instrumentation can elevate her songs.

“bitter” is inspired by heartbreak, loss, and the loneliness of losing someone who you felt mattered.’  - Ruby

‘bitter’ is formed in opposing internal dialogues. Ruby highlights the push and pull of a lost love, of a connectedness that’s hard to shake, but the overarching sting of a betrayal. ‘I melt away, cover me in your blood. It comes straight from my veins’  ‘ashes from the past taste so bitter." The song waxes and wanes between icy metaphors and a semi-sarcastic optimism, ‘You should be thankful, I’m giving you time.’ Tremmello Organs and soaring harmonies accompany Bitter’s gentle yet at times souring acoustic guitar, creating a quiet that builds to lavish euphonics.

‘bitter’ is the lead single from Ruby's upcoming EP, which releases on the 21st September with Tonetic Records. It will be accompanied by a second single, ‘puzzle pieces’, releasing on the 14th, a launch gig at Margate’s Rosslyn Court on the day of release, as well as a visual performance piece to be released on the Tonetic Youtube channel and website.
