4. or Docklands

Party Songs

4.   or Docklands is an experimental solo project from Kent helmed by Jack Coleman. 4.   or Docklands founded their sound in the illustrious chord sequences and gentle tones of singer-songwriters like Nick Drake and Elliot Smith and intermixed them with the electronic experimentations of acts like Broadcast and Stereolab. 4.   or Docklands orients their project around pushing sonic boundaries and writing songs using a more ‘flow’ based approach, that allows the song to unfurl naturally. Their song’s themes tend to allude to faint nostalgia, longing and play on postmodern themes of ‘Disembeddedness’.

On the track Party Songs, 4.   Or Docklands expands their project to involve a full band, drawing from Car Seat Headrest style indie rock, as well as 90s UK dream pop and shoe-gaze era sounds to reflect upon a frenetic and effervescent youth. The song, although essentially about messy house parties of variable quality, speaks to the vulnerability which people can show when trying their best to let go and enjoy themselves; both in succeeding and failing to do so. ‘Party Songs’ is all at once a send up too late nights dancing with friends under crappy disco lights, the melancholy walk home the brisk morning after, and the misty remembrance of it all, years later.
